Hanna & Matt, River Teign

Matt was still at school when his dad set up the mussel farm that today he runs with his wife Hanna. Based in Devon’s beautiful River Teign, the couple alternate between rope-grown and ground-grown mussels, depending on the season. The ground-growns, with harder shells and a longer shelf life, are seeded before being being harvested with a lightweight, low-impact dredge. Hanna and Matt then allow that ground to lie fallow and regenerate for a couple of years before the seeding process starts again. The rope-growns typically have a softer shell and a higher meat yield. Both are absolutely delicious!
