You starred in Ted Lasso, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Merlin and The Inbetweeners.
But my friend Keith’s mum Said you were Never better than When you did the coffee commercials.
The Blend may have been rubbish, But the adverts Were Gold.
I felt moved to write the above - with apologies to EJ Thribb - as I realised two things yesterday.
First, I am an even bigger fan than I thought of the late Anthony Head’s iconic Gold Blend ads.
Second, those ads clearly had a profound impact on my younger self.
The ‘will they, won’t they?’ soap opera nature of the campaign kept many of us on the edges of our seats for years.
It also, of course, helpfully masked the fact that the product itself was really not very good at all.
And yet in this deceit, Gold Blend was far from alone.
The 1980s were - creatively speaking - a golden age of advertising for food and drink companies.
But it’s only really when watching them back now that you realise quite how much time, effort and cash was spent on trying to persuade us to eat and drink absolute crap.
If you don’t believe me, take a look at the video below.
Anyway, must dash. I’m off to eat a Flake in the bath while the phone rings off the hook.
