I’ve nothing against quiche. In fact, I quite like it. But is it really a dish fit for a king? The man himself obviously thinks so, having chosen it to celebrate his coronation. But it’s hardly ‘four-and-twenty-blackbirds’, is it? Or indeed the renowned cherries of Baalbek. Apparently these delectable little fruits were so highly prized by 10th century hardman caliph al-Aziz Billah that he had them flown in to his palace on a daily basis. Yep, you read that right: flown in. Over a thousand years ago. Each morning, 600 carrier pigeons with silk bags attached to their legs - each containing a single cherry - would fly the 600 km or so from Baalbek to Cairo just to satisfy the Mighty One Through God’s culinary cravings. And surely that sort of indulgence is part of what being a monarch is all about? There do seem to be plenty downsides, after all…. Anyway, as Kings and Queens of your own castles we can’t wait to see what you make for your coronation feasts this coming weekend. Do please send pictures, or post them on Instagram. For now, I’ll leave you with the latest artisanal producers to join the Wylde team - Jacob & Rachel, purveyors of the finest British cheeses you’re ever likely to eat, and the rather-royal-sounding-but-lovely-and-down-to-earth Sarah & Andrew, makers of beautifully seasonal, unpasteurised vinegars.
