St. George was from Cappadocia, in what is now Turkey. But in the finest of English traditions, we made him our own. #culturalappropriation The point is that you don’t need to be English to celebrate St. George’s Day next Sunday. (Not least because he also happens to be the patron saint of Portugal, Ethiopia, Bulgaria, Georgia and Ukraine, as well as Catalonia and Aragon in Spain.) Anyway, it turns out that - until the union with Scotland - St. George’s Day was as big a deal in England as Christmas Day, and celebrated with even more (no doubt drunken) gusto. You can only imagine what riotously fun affairs those days must have been.
